Romila Shyam

SCHNELL HANS owes its origin to the part time activity of a newly married bride. The Founder Director Romila Shyam had always had an interest in beauty and hair and not only did she have a flair for it but she would also do makeup and hair styling for a lot of her friends, at a hobby level. At that time, way back in 1966-67, there were no professional training institutes In India, so she started on her own purely by research. She also subscribed to foreign magazines and managed to get study material from Schools of Beauty at London and specialized in Skin Therapy. Soon her clientele began to grow and she started a small professional practice from home.

Within a year, in 1968, she started the first branch of SCHNELL HANS at Mahim and thereafter one at Colaba. Further, not being satisfied with the readymade synthetic products used in India, she started her study of Herbal Cosmetology and with help from some colleagues who were Ayurvedic Vaidyas and Homeopaths, she formulated natural products for skin and hair. Till today, these products made by her are used in all the salons and have even proved to be effective remedies for acne, hair loss, dandruff, etc. Since there were no professional training schools in India and Romila Shyam had personally felt the lack of one, she started the SCHNELL HANS Training Division.

Soon, Romila’s daughter Sunita, who was growing up in the midst of combs and brushes and makeup and face packs, started assisting her mother after school and during holidays and could trim hair and even do threading from the tender age of 10. After her schooling she went to London In 1986 to do an Advanced Course In Hairdressing, Trichology, Makeup and Skin Therapy. On her return, she pioneered an ’Advanced Course for Practicing Beauticians’ and also introduced various new techniques.

The Napean Sea Road Branch was started in 1987 and today, SCHNELL HANS has 2 ultramodern salons cum schools at 2 prime locations, i.e. Napean Sea Road and Bandra – W.. Over 1000 students have received training at Schnell Hans and a number of salons have been started all over India and abroad by many of them including in U.S.A., U.K., West Indies, Canada, the Far East and the Gulf. Incidentally, Schnell Hans is the only institute to include Parlour management, dress sense, tips on diet and Aromatherapy in the training programme. Another highlight is the course on ‘Personality Transformation conducted personally by Director Sunita Motwani-Makhija. Schnell Hans believes in 100% practical training where students are taught on models provided. The theoretical aspects are also taken into account by imparting detailed know-how on skin and hair.

Directors of Schnell Hans, Mrs. Romila Shyam and Sunita Motwanl-Makhija have been trained abroad at various schools in London and New York, including Vidal Sasson, Morris Masterclass, Ray Cochrane, Complections International and The U.K. School of Onychology. They also hold World Federation Diplomas and have even conducted workshops in London.
